WINEMAKER NOTES
From the sun-drenched hillsides of Paso Robles comes the 2023 Austin Hope Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that captures the very essence of California’s Central Coast grandeur. Paso Robles, whose name translates to “Passageway of Oaks,” is a land of rugged beauty and climatic harmony. Here, cool Pacific breezes temper warm, arid days, allowing Cabernet Sauvignon to develop the kind of profound depth and polished elegance that defines great wine. The 2023 vintage stands as a remarkable testament to the resilience of this terroir, with a cooler and wetter season that delayed ripening and yielded fruit of superb balance, complexity, and tension.

The growing season began with abundant winter rainfall that recharged soils and reinvigorated the vines. A mild spring and summer encouraged slow, even maturation, producing berries of concentrated flavor and vivid color. Harvest arrived later than usual, but patience was rewarded with small, thick-skinned grapes bursting with tannin, pigment, and vibrancy. The Austin Hope team, renowned for their meticulous vineyard sourcing, drew from six of Paso Robles’ eleven districts, with the core of the blend coming from Geneseo, Estrella, and Paso Robles Highlands. These sites are known for their calcareous soils and ideal elevations that give the wine its structure and aromatic purity.

In the cellar, the winemaking was as deliberate as it was intuitive. Individual vineyard lots were fermented separately, with extended macerations coaxing out the full measure of color and tannin from each parcel. The wine spent a total of seventeen months in French oak, a careful mix of new and seasoned barrels, imparting a symphony of mocha, spice, and cedar tones without overshadowing the fruit’s natural vibrancy. Racked only twice, the final blend achieved a seamless integration of richness and refinement.

In the glass, the 2023 Austin Hope Cabernet Sauvignon is a study in Paso Robles opulence, dark ruby in hue with soaring aromatics of black currant, ripe cherry, and blackberry, accented by hints of violets, espresso, and warm baking spices. The palate is plush yet precise, bursting with luscious black fruit and layered with notes of clove, nutmeg, and vanilla bean. Polished tannins frame the wine’s generous core, while a vibrant thread of acidity keeps it fresh and lively through a long, silky finish.

This is a Cabernet of unmistakable identity, bold, expressive, and true to Paso Robles. The 2023 vintage confirms once again why Austin Hope stands at the pinnacle of California’s modern Cabernet renaissance.

Dark ruby in color, the Austin Hope Cabernet Sauvignon expresses aromas of freshly picked black currants, ripe cherry and blackberries, with subtle notes of violets, mocha and dried spices. On the palate, it’s a luscious modern-styled wine layered with an abundance of juicy olallieberry and cherry fruit, while nuances of cedar, clove, nutmeg and vanilla bean round out the long smooth finish. Full bodied and rich, balanced by fresh acidity and integrated, polished tannins.
