WINEMAKER NOTES
From the benchlands of Napa Valley comes a wine that speaks with both precision and depth—the Burgess 2021 Promiscua Cabernet Sauvignon. Crafted entirely from estate vineyards that trace their history back more than a century, this bottling reflects the geological and cultural richness of Napa, where volcanic slopes, rocky soils, and meticulous viticulture converge to produce Cabernet of remarkable purity and energy. The 2021 vintage, a near-perfect year for red wines in the Valley, unfolded with even ripening and no harsh extremes, allowing the fruit to achieve full flavor development while retaining structure and fine.
In the glass, the Promiscua Cabernet Sauvignon reveals itself with a lifted aromatic profile that combines delicacy and power. Subtle floral tones drift above a core of freshly cut cedar, red cassis, and ripe Luxardo cherry, framed by hints of red plum and wild herbs. The use of native yeasts and a traditional pied de cuve fermentation brings added layers of complexity, enhancing the wine’s sense of authenticity and connection to place. Aged 22 months in a judicious selection of French oak—20% new and 80% neutral—the wine gains polish without sacrificing its vibrancy, allowing the terroir-driven nuances to shine through.
On the palate, the wine strikes with clarity and poise. The tannins are fine-grained yet persistent, giving a structural backbone that promises longevity, while the acidity lifts and energizes the fruit, creating a seamless balance. At 13.5% alcohol, it offers remarkable freshness and drinkability, standing apart from many of its more opulent peers while maintaining depth and concentration. This is a Cabernet Sauvignon that will evolve gracefully, rewarding cellaring over the next two decades, yet its seductive aromatics and lithe palate make it equally compelling in its youth.
Burgess has long been a steward of Napa’s heritage vineyards, and the Promiscua bottling is a testament to that legacy. Sourced from iconic sites such as Quartz Creek, with its alluvial fans at the base of the Mayacamas, and the historic Sorenson Vineyard carved into Howell Mountain’s volcanic soils, this wine reflects the diversity and grandeur of Napa terroir. Each site contributes its own distinctive voice, harmonized under the careful hand of winemaker Meghan Zobeck, whose dedication to minimal intervention winemaking has brought Burgess into a thrilling new chapter.
The 2021 Burgess Promiscua Cabernet Sauvignon is not just a bottle of wine—it is a portrait of Napa Valley’s resilience, precision, and artistry. A collector’s Cabernet with pedigree and poise, it delivers everything one hopes for from Napa: structure, elegance, and an unshakable sense of place.
