TASTING NOTES
The 2023 Ersol Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is a masterful expression of coastal California terroir—an elegant, fruit-forward wine that reflects precision viticulture and artisanal winemaking. Crafted entirely from 100% Pinot Noir, this release opens with a beautifully layered aromatic profile of boysenberry, pomegranate, and black cherry, lifted by subtle top notes of espresso and toasted oak. On the palate, the wine shows impressive depth, with ripe fruit flavors wrapped in soft, velvety tannins and a long, delicate finish that showcases the judicious use of French oak—50% new, from elite coopers like Remond, François Frère, and Dargaud & Jaegle, and 50% seasoned, 12-year-old oak that imparts nuance without overpowering the fruit.

Sourced from the renowned Sonoma Coast AVA, the fruit for this wine comes from elevated vineyards such as Nightwing and Sunchase, perched over 1,000 feet above sea level. These mountain sites benefit from a rare confluence of coastal fog, rocky Diablo soils, and cool morning breezes that temper ripening and create highly concentrated, small-berried clusters. At Thornton Vineyard, sandy, silt-rich soils and unique clay compositions add minerality and structure. The result is a Pinot Noir that’s as intellectually engaging as it is hedonistically satisfying.

The 2023 vintage brought near-perfect growing conditions to the Sonoma Coast. Consistent winter rainfall gave way to a cool spring and a warm, dry summer, which allowed the fruit to mature slowly and evenly. An extended hang time into mid-September meant the grapes achieved full physiological ripeness, concentrating their flavor while preserving vibrant acidity. The resulting balance in the wine is remarkable—a testament to both site and season.

In the cellar, the winemaking team employed a five-day cold soak to maximize extraction of color and phenolics before fermenting in a blend of open-top bins and stainless steel tanks. Gentle punch-downs preserved the integrity of the fruit, while aging in high-quality French oak for 12 months layered in complexity without sacrificing freshness. The interplay between ripe fruit, spice, minerality, and tannin is seamless.

The Ersol 2023 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is not only a quintessential expression of the appellation, but a testament to precision farming and thoughtful cellar work. For collectors and Pinot lovers alike, this wine delivers authenticity, depth, and finesse, with the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 5–7 years.
