WINEMAKER NOTES
The 2023 Gust Pinot Noir is a compelling expression of the Petaluma Gap, capturing both the raw energy of this wind swept corridor and the quiet precision that defines great cool climate Pinot Noir. This is a beautifully concentrated vintage, shaped by one of the coolest growing seasons in recent memory, delivering a wine of notable depth, balanced acidity, and restrained sugars. The result is a Pinot Noir that speaks clearly of place, offering power without excess, elegance without fragility, and a sense of harmony that elevates it well above the ordinary.
Sourced entirely from two estate vineyards, Diamond Pile Vineyard and Catapult Ranch, this wine benefits from the contrast between sites separated by only five miles yet dramatically different in expression. Diamond Pile Vineyard, positioned at the southwestern base of Sonoma Mountain, is fully exposed to the region’s defining wind and fog. Dijon clones planted on west facing slopes struggle naturally, producing low yields and fruit of striking finesse. This component brings ethereal aromatics of blue raspberry, crushed violets, and subtle baking spice, with a silky texture and lifted acidity. Catapult Ranch, tucked against the western base of Wildcat Mountain, offers a counterpoint. Heritage Pinot Noir clones and gently rolling hills provide protection from the harshest elements, allowing for greater concentration and structure. This portion contributes bold red cherry, wild strawberry, and a faint sauvage character that adds complexity and intrigue.
The 2023 season demanded attentive vineyard work, but patience was rewarded with pristine fruit and remarkable balance. Hand harvested at dawn to preserve freshness, each lot was vinified separately with meticulous care. Whole berry fermentation and a five day cold soak enhanced aromatic purity and color while softening tannins. Native fermentations unfolded naturally, guided by gentle punch downs that preserved finesse rather than brute force. After extended time on skins, the wine was pressed and settled before aging for fifteen months in primarily once used French oak, allowing the vineyards to speak without overt wood influence.
In the glass, the 2023 Gust Pinot Noir is layered and expressive, opening with vivid red and blue fruits, forest floor, and subtle spice. The palate is medium bodied yet persistent, with fine grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, polished finish. This is a serious Pinot Noir built for both immediate pleasure and graceful aging over the next decade. For lovers of nuanced, site driven wines from Sonoma’s most dynamic appellations, this bottling is a standout achievement.

91 POINTS - "A restrained style, with pretty notes of red tea and sandalwood that lace up a core of bitter cherry and damson plum. Gently dusty in feel on the perfumed finish" - Wine Spectator
90 POINTS - "Aromas of dusty Bing cherry, spiced cranberry compote, and cinnamon drive the nose of this Pinot. The palate brings flavors of cranberry relish, purple flowers, and earthy mushroom before a lingering finish with elements of spice and herb mélange." - Wine Enthusiast
