WINEMAKER NOTES
From the elevated terrain of Eagle Peak in Mendocino County, the Masút 2019 Pinot Noir reveals a level of sophistication and character that speaks to its pedigree and provenance. Ben and Jake Fetzer, grandsons of legendary Mendocino vintner Barney Fetzer, have crafted a wine that is both a tribute to their heritage and a confident step forward in California Pinot Noir. Grown at 1,000 feet above sea level in one of the state's most rugged appellations, this wine reflects its high-altitude origins with purity, tension, and depth.
In the glass, the Masút 2019 Pinot Noir delivers a brooding, perfumed bouquet of black cherry compote, crushed blueberries, and wild blackberries, interwoven with savory hints of sagebrush, chaparral, and forest floor. With air, nuances of cinnamon stick, nutmeg, and dried rhubarb emerge, lending aromatic complexity that is both alluring and wild. There’s a subtle whisper of earthy minerality—true to the name "Masút," meaning "dark, rich earth" in the local Native American dialect—that anchors the wine in place.
On the palate, the wine is strikingly well-balanced, offering a seamless interplay between dark fruit concentration and a linear, vibrant acidity. The mouthfeel is silken yet structured, with fine-grained tannins guiding the wine toward a long, savory finish marked by a gentle, food-friendly bitterness. Despite its generosity, there’s a restraint here that suggests the winemakers have carefully allowed the vineyard’s voice to speak without adornment. The French oak aging—10 months in barrel—adds just the right touch of spice and texture, supporting the fruit without ever overwhelming it.
This is a Pinot Noir of precision and soul, a wine that speaks eloquently of site, climate, and intention. While immensely enjoyable now with a decant, particularly alongside wild mushroom risotto, duck breast, or herb-roasted lamb, it also has the balance and core structure to age gracefully for five to seven years. It’s the kind of wine that will only deepen with time, offering a more nuanced expression of its rugged terroir with each passing vintage.
The Masút 2019 Pinot Noir is a compelling argument for the future of Eagle Peak and a must-have for collectors of California’s emerging cool-climate stars. A singular wine of terroir, texture, and tenacity.

95 POINTS - "The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is rich, racy and super-expressive. Silky and deep, with notable resonance, the 2021 offers up dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol, new leather and licorice. Today, it is a very young wine in need of cellaring, but its potential is evident. Dollops of Petit Verdot and Malbec round out the blend. This should be positively stellar." - Vinous
