WINEMAKER NOTES
From the storied vineyards of Rutherford and Oakville, the 2022 Overture Red embodies the seamless artistry and profound sense of place that define Opus One’s legacy. Since its inception in 1993, Overture has served as a timeless expression of the estate’s unique terroir—an eloquent reflection of Napa Valley’s most noble soils, sculpted by the rhythms of nature and the hand of man. Now, for the first time, it bears a vintage designation, celebrating the remarkable character of each growing season and highlighting the diversity of the estate’s alluvial terrain at the western base of the Mayacamas Mountains.
The 2022 vintage reveals an exceptional harmony between ripeness and restraint. Following a winter rich in rainfall, the season’s early warmth and late-summer intensity produced fruit of brilliant concentration and purity. The vineyard team, guided by winemaker Michael Silacci’s unwavering precision, managed the delicate balance between power and finesse through meticulous block-by-block farming. Each parcel was tended to capture not only the richness of the vintage but also the grace that distinguishes Opus One’s vineyards.
In the glass, Overture 2022 unveils a seductive aromatic spectrum—fresh forest berries, crushed cherry, and rose petal interlaced with hints of violet, anise, and toasted almond. On the palate, waves of blackberry, blueberry, and red plum are framed by supple tannins and lifted by vibrant acidity. The texture is polished and enveloping, offering a creamy mouthfeel that carries through to a resonant finish laced with mocha, black tea, and a whisper of sweet spice. This is a wine that bridges the exuberance of youth with the sophistication of age, destined to evolve gracefully over the next decade.
Composed predominantly of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by small proportions of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, Overture 2022 was aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels. The extended skin contact of 20 days has yielded a wine of extraordinary depth and aromatic complexity. Yet beyond its craftsmanship, Overture speaks to a philosophy rooted in stewardship. From the return of grazing sheep to the vineyards to its certification under the Napa Green Initiative, every element of Opus One’s viticulture honors sustainability and the regeneration of the land.
Overture 2022 stands as both a tribute to tradition and a declaration of renewal—a masterfully woven narrative of Napa Valley’s finest terroir, expressed through the quiet power, elegance, and persistence that only time and place can bestow.
