WINEMAKER NOTES
The 2022 vintage of Opus One is a wine of elegance and precision, showcasing the seamless union of Bordeaux tradition and Napa Valley vitality. Emerging from a growing season marked by early rains, turbulent spring, and a late summer heatwave, the wine reflects the deft hand of its vineyard team. Harvested between August 24 and September 26, the fruit was coaxed to perfect ripeness under careful watch, resulting in a wine of extraordinary freshness and poise. This vintage is at once a mirror of its unique season and a continuation of the enduring vision established by Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi.

From the glass, Opus One 2022 reveals a captivating aromatic profile that immediately commands attention. Layers of ripe blueberry and cassis are lifted by the ethereal perfume of dried rose petals, underscored by savory suggestions of olive, graphite, and cigar box. This interplay of fruit and nuance is a signature of great vintages, weaving together Old World refinement with the sun kissed depth of Napa. Each swirl deepens the complexity, promising a profound sensory journey even before the first sip.

On the palate, the wine’s brilliance fully emerges. Vibrant red fruit flavors glide gracefully across the tongue, accented by cocoa, fresh orange peel, and a subtle earth driven minerality. Its structure is defined yet supple, the tannins fine grained and integrated seamlessly with 18 months in new French oak. The mid palate builds with energy and precision, striking a rare balance between concentration and elegance. The finish lingers effortlessly, leaving traces of wet stone, vanilla, and the faintest echo of roasted coffee. It is a finish that is both silken and commanding, underscoring the pedigree of Opus One.

The 2022 vintage is an orchestration of varietals that sings in harmony. Its youthful exuberance is immediately alluring, yet its architecture assures decades of graceful evolution in the cellar. This duality, pleasure in its youth and profound promise for the future, is what elevates Opus One into the pantheon of the world’s most collectible wines.

For the connoisseur seeking a wine that embodies both heritage and innovation, Opus One 2022 stands as a beacon. It is not merely a bottle but an experience, a convergence of passion, terroir, and artistry. With its remarkable freshness, complexity, and longevity, this vintage secures Opus One’s place as one of Napa Valley’s most transcendent achievements.

Blend: 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 6.5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, & 0.5% Malbec
100 POINTS - "A classical vintage that perfectly suits the Opus style. Gorgeous vivid plum colour, sculpted, balanced, with a ton of lift, waves of rose petals, iris and peony, soft grilled cumin, sage and white pepper spice. Love the hidden power here and the supple slightly chalky tannins that are structured in their architecture with a precision and carved quality. Precise, layered and stretched out, a brilliant Opus, concentrated and yet delicate. Feels pared back and captures the spirit of early Opus, when it moved forward the conversation of what Napa could be. Michael Silacci director, 100% new oak for ageing extremely well integrated even now." - Jane Anson

99 POINTS - "An enticing aroma of violets, cherry blossoms, fresh blue and black fruit and great structure define this beautiful, age-worthy wine. Subtle layering of fruit and oak spices between firm, fine-grained and supportive tannins gives it a calm intensity. So elegant and polished. Hints of cinnamon and graphite accent blackcurrant and blueberry flavors that linger and grow in a long finish. Already attractive to drink, but best after 2029." - James Suckling

98 POINTS - "The 2021 Opus One is composed of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot, and 0.5% each of Merlot and Malbec. It was bottled in July 2023. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes barreling out of the glass with gregarious notions of creme de cassis, wild blueberries, and redcurrant jelly followed by hints of cedar chest, sassafras, vanilla pod, and dark chocolate plus a waft of lilacs. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers shimmery red, black, and blue fruit layers with a firm texture of rounded tannins and impressive tension, finishing long and fragrant." - The Wine Insitute

98 POINTS - "More in the structured style of the 2018 as opposed to the voluptuous style of the 2019, the 2021 Opus One is another riveting wine from this estate. Pure cassis, graphite, chocolate, and nicely integrated oak, as well as an undeniable sense of minerality, all emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, building tannins, wonderful purity and precision, and a great finish. This is a classic Napa Valley Cabernet in the making, and it’s going to evolve for 20-25 years if well stored." - Jeb Dunnuck

97 POINTS - "The 2021 Opus One is dark, powerful and super- concentrated. Lavender, rose petal, dark cherry, plum, mocha and gravel race across the palate. Still very much a youngster, the 2021 is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. All the elements are so well balanced for a young Opus One out of barrel. There’s real palate presence and weight here." - Vinous
Opus One 2022 exudes charm and sophistication from the glass. Primary aromas of blueberry, cassis, and dried rose petals with underlying notes of olive, cigar box, and graphite create a rich and inviting bouquet. On the palate, bright red-fruit flavors, cocoa, and fresh orange peel waltz together into a harmonious and balanced profile. Long and elegant, the finish delivers touches of wet stone, vanilla, and a hint of coffee. Fine-grained tannins and juicy ripeness signal the promise of a long future in the cellar..
