WINEMAKER NOTES
Twomey’s 2022 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir is a compelling expression of cool-climate California Pinot Noir, combining elegance, bright acidity, and remarkable detail in a wine that delivers far more complexity than its approachable style might suggest. Sourced from the Bearman Bend and Monument Tree Vineyards, this vintage captures the character of Anderson Valley with a graceful structure and layered palate that should appeal to anyone who appreciates refined, terroir driven Pinot Noir.
The 2022 growing season gave this Anderson Valley Pinot Noir an unusually interesting path to maturity. Plentiful winter rains replenished soil moisture and encouraged strong canopy development, while a prolonged frost season and intermittent spring rains shaped the growing season. Cooler temperatures during flowering resulted in slightly lower fruit set and millerandage, creating a mix of smaller, concentrated berries among larger fruit. According to Twomey, this contributed to the wine’s compelling tannin structure, giving the finished Pinot Noir definition without sacrificing its inherent elegance.
In the glass, the 2022 Twomey Anderson Valley Pinot Noir shows the kind of aromatic complexity that makes cool climate Pinot Noir so captivating. Dark cherry and wild strawberry provide the core of the fruit profile, while nuanced notes of nougat, fir tips, and underbrush add savory and earthy dimensions. Rather than relying on sheer richness, the wine builds its appeal through layers, balance, and the interplay between ripe fruit and more distinctive woodland character.
The palate follows through beautifully, with bright acidity layered across the mid palate and carrying the wine toward a lifted, persistent finish. That freshness gives the fruit energy while the tannin structure adds shape and substance. It is an elegant Pinot Noir with enough depth to remain interesting from the first sip through the finish, demonstrating exactly why Anderson Valley has become such a respected source for premium California Pinot Noir.
The winemaking further emphasizes that balance. The wine spent 10 months in barrel followed by six months on primary lees, with 100% French oak and 32% new oak. Just 3% whole cluster was used, allowing the vineyard character and fruit to remain at the forefront while adding subtle textural complexity. At 14.1% alcohol, the wine retains a sense of poise rather than heaviness.
Released in April 2024, the Twomey 2022 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir is a sophisticated California Pinot Noir built around brightness, elegance, layered fruit, and distinctive cool climate character. For Pinot Noir lovers looking beyond the usual California appellations, this is an especially expressive example of what Anderson Valley can deliver.

93 POINTS - "Twomey's first vintage in the Deep End of Anderson Valley was made entirely with estate-grown fruit from their Bearman Bend property and Monument Tree. It has very pretty deep forest notes with red berry fruit dusted with brown baking spices and cedarwood. Compote-rich boysenberry fruit on the palate layers in a soft palate that feels livened by orange peel citrus. Silky tannins glide to a crushed stone mineral finish with more flamed orange peel, clove, and earth." - Decanter
92 POINTS - "From slightly earthy, sun-baked aromas to a lightly gripping texture and charming red fruit flavors, this is a well-balanced, medium- to full-bodied wine. Harvested after the famous heat dome of early September, it still retains good freshness." - James Suckling
