Bella Union: A Cabernet Sauvignon Blend from Napa Valley's Far Niente and Nickel & Nickel

Dec 15th 2022

Bella Union is a Napa Valley winery that was established in 2012 by the partners of Far Niente and Nickel & Nickel. The winemaking team at Bella Union specializes in blending Cabernet Sauvignon, in contrast to the single-variety wines of Nickel & Nickel and the estate wines of Far Niente. The Bella Union vineyard, located in Rutherford, is the source of the grapes for this wine. The vineyard's loamy soils are planted primarily with 20-30 year old Cabernet Sauvignon vines, and the blend also includes grapes from other notable Napa Valley vineyards such as the DeCarle Vineyard on the Rutherford Bench.

The 2018 Bella Union Cabernet Sauvignon is a dense ruby color with aromas of ripe plums, blackberries, and dried brush. On the palate, the wine is juicy and fruit forward, with flavors of boysenberries, blackberries, plums, and currants, along with hints of earth and spices. The tannins are well integrated, making it an easy-drinking wine. It has a medium body and a 14.5% ABV. The suggested retail price is $80.

In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, Bella Union also produces Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Rosé. All of the winery's wines are certified sustainable by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA). Bella Union is part of a family of wineries that includes Nickel & Nickel, Far Niente, EnRoute, Post & Beam, and Dolce.
